The Law Society of Kenya has urged urgent investigations into the death of advocate Tom Ouya Imbukwa, saying he was allegedly assaulted and tortured by unknown individuals. LSK President Charles Kanjama called on DCI and police to act swiftly.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for urgent investigations into the death of advocate Tom Ouya Imbukwa, who is alleged to have been assaulted, tortured and killed by unknown individuals, saying the incident amounts to a serious attack on the legal profession and demanding swift action from security agencies.

LSK President Charles Kanjama has urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Police Service to move quickly and carry out credible investigations into the circumstances surrounding the advocate’s death, describing it as a painful loss to the legal community.

In a statement on Thursday, Kanjama said the society received the news with shock and deep sadness, extending condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased advocate.

“The Law Society of Kenya has learned with profound shock and grief of the tragic death of our colleague, Advocate Tom Ouya Imbukwa, following a brutal assault and torture. We extend our deepest condolences to Tom's family, friends and all members of the legal fraternity who mourn this devastating loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Kanjama said.

He added that the circumstances of the killing could not be ignored and required immediate attention from authorities.

“Our colleague was assaulted, tortured, and murdered by unknown persons. The circumstances surrounding Tom's death demand our unequivocal condemnation and immediate action.”

LSK has appealed to members of the public with any information to share it with investigators, assuring them of protection and anonymity.

Kanjama warned that if investigations point to involvement of state actors, then full accountability must follow.

“Your anonymity and safety will be protected. We call upon the National Police Service and the DCI to conduct swift, effective, and credible investigations. If state actors were involved in this torture and murder, there must be no sanctuary for them,” he said.

The society has also pledged to support the family of the late advocate during investigations and any legal processes that may follow, adding that it will decide on further steps once more details emerge.

“We will not rest until those responsible are held accountable. Justice for Tom Ouya Imbukwa is not negotiable,” Kanjama added.

LSK has also warned against attacks on lawyers, saying it will not remain silent as members of the profession face threats and violence.

The society said it will continue to follow the investigations closely while engaging relevant authorities to ensure a transparent and credible process.

The killing has sparked concern within the legal fraternity, with growing calls for stronger protection of advocates and strict enforcement of the rule of law.
